An investigation of human vs. technology-induced variation in catchability for a selection of European fishing fleets ArchiMer
Mahevas, Stephanie; Vermard, Youen; Hutton, Trevor; Iriondo, Ane; Jadaud, Angelique; Maravelias, Christos D.; Punzon, Antonio; Sacchi, Jacques; Tidd, Alex; Tsitsika, Efthymia; Marchal, Paul; Goascoz, Nicolas; Mortreux, Serge; Roos, David.
The impact of the fishing effort exerted by a vessel on a population depends on catchability, which depends on population accessibility and fishing power. The work investigated whether the variation in fishing power could be the result of the technical characteristics of a vessel and/or its gear or whether it is a reflection of inter-vessel differences not accounted for by the technical attributes. These inter-vessel differences could be indicative of a skipper/crew experience effect. To improve understanding of the relationships, landings per unit effort (lpue) from logbooks and technical information on vessels and gears (collected during interviews) were used to identify variables that explained variations in fishing power. The analysis was undertaken by...

Sacchi, Jacques; Lespagnol, Patrick.

Sacchi, Jacques; Tessier, E.
The development of the FAD gave rise to technical problems owing to their conception, their setting spot and of their utilisation. Failings generated by the unreliability of components or the uncertain repair precariousness, those can prove to be here more and more expensive with the progression of the ageing of devices and reasons of their loss. For as various domains that aerospace or the fishing deck layout, the engineering has functional analysis tools that permit to reduce conception uncertainties of systems by the mean of a hierarchical classification of function values of components. The application of one of these techniques, the FMEA, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, to the study of reasons of FAD loss in La Reunion describes perfectly...

Guillou, Annie; Lagin, Alain-sabin; Lebeau, Alain; Priour, Daniel; Repecaud, Michel; Reynal, Lionel; Sacchi, Jacques; Taquet, Marc.
Since 1983, the research on the optimal conception of FADs in Martinique was particularly focused on the improvement of their resistance to different maritime or human aggressions. Following several experimentations made with different types of fads, the choice was brought on light devices anchored in 1 500 to 2 000 m depths and an experimental approach was conducted to identify the causes of loss of fads and to attempt to modelize their hydrodynamic behaviour with relation to the sea conditions. Three mathematical models are used to simulate the fad behaviour under current action and swell, and to estimate the forces exerted on each part of the device. The results of this study are presented. The fad design used nowadays for the development of pelagic...

Impact of technological creep on fishing effort and fishing mortality, for a selection of European fleets ArchiMer
Marchal, Paul; Andersen, Bo; Caillart, B.; Eigaard, Ole; Guyader, Olivier; Hovgaard, Holger; Iriondo, Ane; Le Fur, Fanny; Sacchi, Jacques; Santurtun, Marina.
Face-to-face interviews were conducted to identify the main changes in gear and vessel technology that may have improved the fishing efficiency of a number of French, Danish, and Basque fleets over the past few decades. Important changes include the gradual appearance of twin trawls (Danish and French trawlers) and trammel-nets (French gillnetters), and the increased polyvalence of Basque bottom trawlers. The results suggest that fishing effort descriptors that are not traditionally measured (gear type, groundrope type, length of net used per day, headline length, crew size, number of winch or net drums) may have a substantial impact on catch rates. Adjusting fishing effort using such descriptors may generally improve the relationship between fishing...

Sacchi, Jacques; Lagin, Alain; Chaudemar, Victor; Langlais, Claude.

Sacchi, Jacques; Le Corre, Gildas; Mortreux, Serge.

The scientific cruise Observhal96 took place in August 4-27, 1996 with the underwater system for exploration and intervention « Cyana » and the support vessel « Suroît ». The goal of this IFREMER first use of a man opereted submersible for a fisheries study was to observe fishes and invertebrates in their environment, as well as fishing gears in operation. All the dives, 2 to 5 hours long, took place off Brittany in Atlantic. Five were shalower than 100 meters, nine between 100 and 200 meters, one at 400 meters and for deeper than 1000 meters. Six dives have been dedicated to in situ study of the impact of fishing gears : observation of the geometry of a monkfish tramel net and analysis of losses during hauling ; tracks of a bottom trawl and relative...

Lescure, Jean; Cateau, Sidonie; Senegas, Jean Baptiste; Oliver, Guy; De Massary, Jean Christophe; Poisson, Francois; Cesarini, Catherine; Sacchi, Jacques.
The presence of the Green Turtle, Chelonia mydas (Linnaeus, 1758) is very rare in Mediterranean French waters. There is no record before 1987. Thirteen records were reported from 1987 to 2014, eight during the five last years (five in 2014). This increase is mainly due to the recent development of survey network. Green Turtles are seen from June to September.

Restoring the ecosystem creates wealth. The case of the Northern coast of Tunisia’s deep-water rose shrimp trawl fishery ArchiMer
Vendeville, Philippe; Fadhel, Hosni; Magraoui, Amira; Sacchi, Jacques.
The demersal trawl fishery of the north Tunisian coast primarily targets the deep-water rose shrimp, Parapenaeus longirostris, and secondarily a variety of demersal fish species. These fishes include hake (Merluccius merluccius), common pandora (Pagellus erythrinus), red mullet (Mullus barbatus), surmullet (Mullus surmuletus), Atlantic horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus), bogue (Boops boops), picarel (Spicara smaris) and spotted flounder (Citharus linguatula). A bioeconomic model was used to test management measures through scenarios that ran over eleven years to estimate the viability of the fishery according to biological and economic results. The most beneficial scenario was the combination of several management measures including a temporal closure of...

The effects of trawl codend mesh size selectivity on the length composition of catches of pandora, Pagellus erythrinus L. 1758 in the shelf area of the Montenegrin coast (South Adriatic) ArchiMer
Joksimovic, Aleksandar; Regner, Slobodan; Sacchi, Jacques.
Selectivity curves of pandora (Pagellus erythrinus, L. 1758) have been estimated in the area of the Montenegrin shelf (South Adriatic), for trawls with bar mesh sizes of 13.5, 16.1, 17.5, 22 and 35 mm (according to national legislation in Montenegro bar mesh size is measured from knot to knot which is, according to Commission Regulation (EC) No. 129/2003, stretched mesh size divided by 2). Although the existing national legislation prescribes that the minimum mesh size of the trawl be not smaller than 20 mm, trawls with forbidden mesh sizes are often used in this area. Results obtained showed that meshes smaller than 20 mm (13.5 mm, 16.1 mm, 17.5 mm) catch large numbers of immature individuals, since the length of 50% retention (L50%) for all these meshes...
